📢 EU: 2026 update on the regulation of Bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact materials

2 February 2026

The Commission Regulation (EU) 2026/250 of 2 February 2026 introduces essential technical corrections to Regulation (EU) 2024/3190 concerning the use of bisphenol A (BPA), other bisphenols, and related substances classified as hazardous in certain food contact materials and articles.

These amendments do not substantially change the existing bans, but rather clarify key interpretative and implementation aspects, supporting a consistent and harmonised application of the rules across the EU.

📌 Key contents of the update

  • Restoring terminological consistency within Regulation (EU) 2024/3190, particularly regarding the definition and inclusion of bisphenol forms covered by the ban.
  • Clarifying transitional provisions, removing ambiguities related to the timing of restrictions and conditions for placing materials on the market.
  • Aligning technical requirements, facilitating a clearer understanding of declarations of compliance and documentation obligations related to material composition.
